‘Arti-ist Class’:
INTRO TO LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING
~
An 8‑Part Course ~

Wednesday, September 17 - Wednesday, November 5: 6:30pm ~ 8:30pm + EXHIBITION

This course is designed for artists with some oil painting experience who want to deepen their understanding of landscape through a structured, supportive process. Over eight sessions, participants will explore the key elements that make compelling landscape paintings — tone, composition, colour, and atmosphere — while working toward the completion of a single, resolved piece. The focus is on seeing the landscape through an artist’s lens: simplifying complexity, capturing light, and creating mood. With demonstrations, one-on-one feedback, and group discussion, this class offers a dynamic mix of technique and creativity for painters ready to take their landscapes further.

These Intro to Landscape Oil Painting “Art-ist” classes aren’t just about learning technique — they’re about learning how to think, decide, and create like an artist. As an international exhibiting artist, Christopher pulls back the curtain on the process: how to embrace experimentation, work through doubt, and make choices with an exhibition in mind. Each class is about painting, yes — but also about the mindset of an artist: balancing confidence and vulnerability, shaping work for an audience, and finding meaning in process.

Course Highlights:

Class 1 – Light & Landscape: Tonal Studies in Black & White
We begin by studying tonal values using black and white paint to explore light and shadow in a simplified landscape scene. Participants will gain an understanding of atmospheric perspective and how value creates depth — essential tools for landscape painters.

Class 2 – Laying the Ground: Composition & the Underpainting
This class focuses on sketching out a landscape composition and developing a tonal underpainting. Using reference photos or drawings, we block in major forms and begin to define space, horizon lines, and depth.

Class 3 – Sky & Ground: Learning to See Colour in Nature
We introduce a limited colour palette and begin exploring how to mix convincing sky tones, earth tones, and natural greens. Participants learn to interpret reference material while simplifying the landscape into cohesive colour shapes.

Class 4 – Distance & Depth: Working with Atmospheric Perspective
We continue building our paintings by refining foreground, middle ground, and background. Emphasis is placed on colour temperature and edge control to create a sense of space and movement within the scene.

Class 5 – The Landscape Begins: Sketching & Planning the Composition
Drawing on the tonal, compositional, and colour theory skills developed in the first four sessions, participants begin planning a single landscape painting. We’ll work from reference photos or sketches and use thumbnail drawings to map out strong compositions before moving to canvas.

Class 6 – Blocking In: Big Shapes, Tonal Relationships & Atmosphere
With a solid plan in place, we begin the underpainting and block in major shapes, values, and colour zones. Emphasis is placed on working broadly — seeing the whole composition, establishing light direction, and setting the emotional tone of the painting.

Class 7 – Developing the Painting: Refining Form, Light & Colour
Participants continue building their landscapes, shifting focus toward colour harmony, edge control, and painterly mark-making. Christopher provides individual guidance and demonstrations to help resolve problem areas and bring depth and cohesion to the work.

Class 8 – Final Refinements: Finishing Touches & Preparation for Exhibition
This final working session is dedicated to thoughtful editing, balancing composition, and adding final flourishes — whether it’s a highlight on a rooftop, a deepening of shadow, or a subtle glow in the sky. We’ll also discuss signing, titling, and preparing work for presentation.

Exhibition – A Celebration of the Process
The course ends with a relaxed, community-driven pop-up exhibition. Each participant will display a selection of works - from sketches and studies to final paintings - in a casual, non-commercial setting. It’s a celebration of growth, creativity, and shared experience.
