FULL OF WOOL: FOREST FUNGI
~
A Two-Day Needle Felting & Wet Felting Workshop with Elise Campbell ~

Saturday, June 6 - Sunday, June 7, 2026
9:30am - 4:30pm = 12 total hours

Join award-winning fibre artist Elise Campbell for an immersive two-day workshop exploring the enchanting world of felted forest fungi. Combining both wet felting and sculptural needle felting techniques, participants will learn how to transform wool fibres into beautifully textured mushrooms inspired by the quiet magic of the forest floor.

The workshop begins with an introduction to wet felting, where participants will learn how to create strong, organic base forms using wool, water, soap, and agitation. This foundational process creates the structure and density needed for sculptural forms.

Building on these foundations, Elise will guide participants through needle felting techniques used to sculpt, refine, and add character to each mushroom. Participants will explore how density can be used as a sculptural tool, shaping wool into forms that feel both natural and whimsical.

Throughout the workshop Elise will share her expertise on:

• Selecting and preparing wool for felting
• Understanding different wool breeds and their properties
• Choosing the appropriate felting needles and tools
• Building strong internal structures for sculptural forms
• Blending colours to create depth and realism
• Achieving smooth surfaces and refined finishes

Participants will be encouraged to experiment with their own interpretations of woodland fungi — from realistic botanical forms to imaginative forest creations.

This workshop is beginner-friendly while also offering valuable insights for those with some felting experience who wish to expand their sculptural skills and confidence with fibre.

By the end of the weekend, participants will leave with a collection of hand-felted forest sculptures and a deeper understanding of how wet felting and needle felting can work together to create richly textured sculptural work.

Elise Campbell is a textile artist and educator based in Stillwater Lake, Nova Scotia. Working primarily with wool, silk, and other natural fibres, she creates sculptural pieces that push traditional craft boundaries and the limits of wool as a medium by exploring human-nature relationships through textural forms, histories, and surface design. Utilizing both contemporary techniques such as needle felting and Nuno felting alongside the traditional practice of wet felting, she creates work that reflects narratives of ecological value, weaving in themes of environmental stewardship.
Campbell's dedication to elevating wool fibre is evident in her commitment to innovation and exploration. Her work has garnered recognition and support from prestigious institutions such as the Canada Council for the Arts, The Robert Pope Foundation, and the Denis Diderot Grant, and has been showcased in galleries and museums across Canada and in London, UK.
